The A*STAR National Metrology Centre (NMC) and the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) are privileged to host the 34th Asia Pacific Metrology Programme (APMP) General Assembly and Related Meetings in Singapore (APMP 2018).

This year’s APMP GA and related meetings will convene in the wake of an exciting, important and historic event, the General Conference of Weights and Measures (CGPM) of the Metre Treaty in November 2018, when the redefinition of the International System of Units (SI) fully based on natural laws is expected to be approved.  It will be one of the largest changes of the SI since its inception in 1960.  The universality and stability of the natural constants used in redefining the SI will lead to greater consistency, reliability, and precision of measurements world-wide.  It is expected to have immense impact on scientific discovery and innovation with wide-reaching consequences in all spheres of modern life and industry sectors, including computing, electronics, aerospace, health and the environment, among many others. This development comes at a timely juncture where major forces of change, including accelerating technological change, climate change, and demographic changes, are presenting us with constant new challenges and opportunities.  Many of our regional economies are digitalizing and adopting Industry 4.0, Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, robotics and automation to improve productivity and efficiency.  Food safety, clean air and clean water, and healthcare are also areas of paramount importance to the region.  Metrology is thus cut out to play a critical role in creating a future using these new technologies to progress greater connectivity, trade and quality of life.

Working with the APMP Executive Committee and the Technical Committees, we have lined up a list of exciting programmes, tutorials and workshops to advance our knowledge and capacity to make sense of these opportunities and to address the challenges.  We would like to cordially invite all of you to join us in APMP 2018 and experience the vibrant city of Singapore.  We are confident that APMP 2018 will be a fruitful event for establishing close collaboration and catalysing metrology solutions for society and industry.
